ReelBlend #63: Our Shazam! Interview With David F. Sandberg And Peter Safran

ReelBlend #63: Our Shazam! Interview With David F. Sandberg And Peter Safran

Boy, we have been on a streak lately. ReelBlend has been getting some exciting guests, if we do say so ourselves. Hot on the heels of Kevin’s incredible Danny Elfman interview in last week’s episode, we’re joined this week by Shazam! filmmaker David F. Sandberg and uber-DC producer Peter Safran. You are going to want to listen!

Before they get to the interview, the guys have a lot to discuss. They plug the Chicago Meet Up, which is taking place on Saturday, April 13. That will be during Star Wars Celebration, which Jake and Sean plan to cover.

From there, the guys read an ACTUAL review from Kevin’s mom. She listened to the show, and shared her thoughts. It’s pure gold.

The guys then moved to the casting for Jason Reitman’s new Ghostbusters movie, which added Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard and McKenna Grace in pivotal roles. The movie remains a mystery of sorts, as we don’t even know if the original actors will be returning. We assume, because Reitman’s involved, that the Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson will return. But nothing has been confirmed.

You know what was confirmed? Mark Hamill voicing Chucky in the new Child’s Play. And that’s AWESOME.

Finally, Sean was able to share several key Avengers: Endgame details that he picked up from Anthony Russo on the phone last week. The information was embargoed, but now it can be shared. Hope you dig it.

Speaking of digging it, you will dig the interview that Kevin did with David F. Sandberg and Peter Safran on behalf of Shazam! Press play above and listen!

Jesse Eisenberg Explains Why The Zombieland: Double Tap Cast Is Working Extra Hard

Jesse Eisenberg Explains Why The Zombieland: Double Tap Cast Is Working Extra Hard
Columbus running from the undead

Aside from superheroes, one of the most popular macguffins in entertainment world are zombies. The undead have captivated audiences since back in 1968's Night of the Living Dead, with endless adaptations coming on both the silver and small screen. While The Walking Dead may have revolutionized zombies for the modern audience, Ruben Fleischer's Zombieland arrived in theaters years before Rick Grimes woke up in the apocalypse.

The zombie comedy hit is finally getting a sequel with Zombieland: Double Tap, which is set to arrive this October. The four leading actors are set to reprise their roles in the highly anticipated follow-up: Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone, Abigail Breslin, and Jesse Eisenberg. Eisenberg recently revealed that everyone involved in Double Tap is working especially hard. After joking about phoning it in, he said:

No, the opposite. We’re working so hard. It’s one of these movies that, people loved it for personal reasons. So it’s not just a big hit movie. People love it for personal reasons so you want to make sure it’s as funny and as personal as the other one.

It looks like Jesse Eisenberg and the rest of the Zombieland: Double Tap cast truly understands just how beloved the first movie is. As such, they're taking special care to provide the same mixture of laughs and heart with Ruben Fleischer's sequel.

Jesse Eisenberg's comments to Movieweb will no doubt excite the many fans of the first Zombieland movie. The blockbuster defied genre, and made light out of the zombie apocalypse in a fresh and exciting way, while also making an impressive amount of money in theaters. The years since Zombieland arrived have elevated the project to cult status, so the pressure is on to deliver something as unique and twisted as the first movie.

Director Ruben Fleischer will be back to direct Zombieland: Double Tap, fresh off the massive success of his comic book movie Venom. He brought his same unique tone and vision to that Sony blockbuster, so he should hopefully have the momentum to bring back his zombie franchise to theaters. And with the original cast also returning, the pieces of the puzzle have presumably been set up for a great sequel.

The quartet of returning actors aside, there is some new and exciting talent being brought into the franchise in Zombieland: Double Tap. Newcomers including Rosario Dawson, Silicon Valley's Thomas Middleditch, Luke Wilson, and Zoe Deutch (Why Him?). It's a significantly larger cast than the first film, so it appears the surviving humans will factor heavily into the upcoming film's narrative. While Zombieland was mostly the four people vs the dead, it should be interesting to see how the world has changed since we last saw those returning characters.

Zombieland: Double Tap will arrive in theaters on October 11th. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

Why Wolverine Isn’t In Dark Phoenix, According To Simon Kinberg

Why Wolverine Isn’t In Dark Phoenix, According To Simon Kinberg
Hugh Jackman as Wolverine in X-Men: Days of Future Past

Although the X-Men are traditionally an ensemble-led property, there’s no question that when it comes to the film franchise, Wolverine was the most prominent character. With the exception of Deadpool, Hugh Jackman played the clawed mutant in every X-Men-related movie from 2000 to 2017, officially retiring from the role in Logan.

However, since Dark Phoenix is marking the last of the Fox era’s main X-Men movies, you might have wondered if Hugh Jackman will reprise Wolverine for a cameo, similar to his appearances in First Class and Apocalypse. Well, no such luck, and not just because Hugh Jackman hung up the adamantium claws. Here’s what director Simon Kinberg had to say about Wolverine’s absence in Dark Phoenix:

If you know the Dark Phoenix story, you’d want to really service the love story between Logan and Jean. And I think the notion of Hugh Jackman, as great as he looks for his age, and Sophie Turner — it didn’t sit well with me. Or anyone else!

Simon Kinberg makes a fair point. On the one hand, there was a love triangle between Cyclops, Jean Grey and Wolverine in the comics era when The Dark Phoenix Saga was published, and X-Men: The Last Stand continued exploring the latter two’s romantic dynamic. Dark Phoenix eschewing that is a notable departure from the source material.

On the other hand, while there’s only a four-year age difference between Hugh Jackman and original Jean Grey Famke Janssen, Jackman and Sophie Turner have nearly 30 years separating them. Granted, Wolverine is nearly two centuries old in the modern day X-Men universe, so age will always be an issue with any woman he gets romantically involved with, but since visually it’s more noticeable between Jackman and Turner, Kinberg and the creative team decided to set that element of the original story aside.

Additionally, Simon Kinberg told Rolling Stone that excluding Wolverine from Dark Phoenix came from not wanting to divert attention from the main character, as this movie revolves around Jean Grey’s corruption. Kinberg continued:

There was an element of this being Jean’s story. And I was committing so fully to it that I didn’t want to run the risk of pulling away from Jean by going to the well of a fan-favorite character in these movies. I wanted this to be a very different experience of seeing an X-Men movie.

At least we know that in this new timeline that Dark Phoenix and its predecessor take place in, Wolverine is still set to join the X-Men somewhere down the line, just like he did in the original timeline. But as far as Dark Phoenix goes, he’s still doing his own thing nine years after Jean Grey, Cyclops and Nightcrawler freed him from William Stryker’s facility.

It also helps that Wolverine’s story was concluded in Logan, where (SPOILER ALERT) the character died in the year 2029 protecting his daughter and other young mutants being targeted by Transigen. Jackman made it clear after Logan’s release that he would not play Wolverine again, so even if Simon Kinberg and his team had wanted to include the character in Dark Phoenix, it’s highly unlikely the actor would have come back.

Dark Phoenix opens in theaters this Friday, June 7. Stay tuned to CinemaBlend for more coverage (including our review of the movie) and browse through our 2019 release schedule to learn what movies there are to look forward to later this year.

Full Downton Abbey Trailer Reveals A Visit From The King And Carson's Return

Full Downton Abbey Trailer Reveals A Visit From The King And Carson's Return
Mary's hair in Downton Abbey movie 1927

Downton Abbey won’t be hitting theaters until September, but Focus Features has wasted no time giving us early glimpses regarding what to expect. Following a quick teaser trailer a few months ago, we’ve finally gotten a good look at the grandeur and the opulence of the new season.

It’s 1927 and the King and Queen are coming to Downton. Yes the King and Queen! What does that entail? Take a look.

People are in a tizzy about the big and unexpected visit, to the point where Lady Mary asks the now-retired Carson to return to his post at the manor.

There’s more seemingly going on, as Lady Mary seems to be contemplating leaving Downton Abbey altogether, although her trusty maid Anna seems to be at least attempting to talk Lady Mary out of whatever she’s planning.

Although we’ve seen a teaser, a lot of this is big news, particularly Carson’s return, but also just knowing the very royal premise of the movie is quite exciting. It looks as if the household has changed somewhat since we've last seen it, but as much as things have changed, they've also stayed the same.

In fact, the same old “the world is continually modernizing” narrative that has been a major component throughout the history of Downton Abbey will certainly be present in the big screen venture, which should feel very familiar to fans of the show.

Most of the cast is present in the trailer for Downton Abbey, including Maggie Smith’s Dowager Countess, who once joked her character would be over 100 by now. She also point blank said she didn’t want a movie repeatedly, but she’s definitely going to be back for the big screen venture, as are most of the major characters from the TV series (or at least those who were around at the end of the show). All in all, it's nice to see everyone get a little screen time in this trailer.

The trailer closes with a grand entrance from the “Your Majesties,” although we don’t get to see their faces or full looks yet. In fact, the movie has cast quite a few newcomer actors and actresses who haven't made appearances in this first full trailer yet. For now, Downton Abbey fans will need to content themselves with talking about the premise, the returning characters and, of course, whether or not we enjoy Lady Mary's current haircut.

Still, we're still quite a bit of a ways away from the release of Downton Abbey later in 2019. Downton Abbey will officially hit theaters on September 20th, but if you'd like to see what's heading into theaters in the meantime, take a look at CinemaBlend's full movies schedule.

Mark Hamill’s Chucky Laugh For Child’s Play Might Give You Joker Vibes

Mark Hamill’s Chucky Laugh For Child’s Play Might Give You Joker Vibes
Child's Play Poster Chucky standing with a knife in the dark

Some people just have those laughs so distinct that you could point them out even in a crowded room. Mark Hamill is one such person, particularly after decades of portraying various versions of the classic Batman villain, The Joker. With a new icon waiting to be reborn in his image, Hamill’s recent announcement as the voice of Chucky in the Child’s Play reboot is about to get his iconic vocal stamp imprinted on it as well, and judging by the result below, it sounds like the joke is on us yet again:

If you’re getting a serious feeling that The Joker has somehow found himself in a brand new smart device, you’re not the only one. Listening to that small clip of Child’s Play’s new Chucky laughing maniacally as he wishes Andy a pleasant good night has triggered some serious flashbacks to many a night in the Gotham City of Batman: The Animated Series.

Of course, it isn’t all greasepaint and squirting flowers here, as the new trailers for Child’s Play have shown a reinvention of the original killer doll; one that sees Chucky going digital and having the ability to hack into various devices linked to a Wi-Fi connection. So just when you thought it was safe to link your thermostat, or even your workbench, to some sort of smart apparatus, you might want to think twice once this special doll enters the equation.

There are definitely some challenges facing the new Child’s Play film, especially with its place as a reboot not sanctioned by the series’ creator, Don Mancini. As this is a project that competes with his TV series continuation of the original continuity, there’s been a bit of friction between those on that side of the fence and this new MGM/Orion reboot.

But one factor that seems to drive home the fact that, at the very least, this new Child’s Play redo will be its own thing is the hiring of Mark Hamill to do the voice of Chucky. Having a talent as singular as Hamill on board differentiates the approach between the old and the new.

So rather than just try to find a Brad Dourif soundalike, this new production went and found itself an equally formidable talent that will give a new generation nightmares. And that’s something we should all be grateful for.

Before we leave the matter, we’d like to present a clip reel of Mr. Hamill’s best moments involving that classic Joker laugh. Not only does it make for a great comparison with the recent efforts shared on the film’s Twitter, it’s also a fantastic reminder of the gleeful panic we’ll be in store for with the new Child’s Play.

Child’s Play cuts into the box office competition on June 21. But if you’re looking to get spooked out a little sooner, head over to our 2019 release schedule and see what sort of adventures you can scare up.

The Conjuring Inspiration Lorraine Warren Has Died At 92

The Conjuring Inspiration Lorraine Warren Has Died At 92
Lorraine Warren in an interview for The Conjuring

Since the spine-chilling release of 2013’s The Conjuring, a successful franchise of sequels and spinoffs has ruled the horror genre. The interconnected universe is inspired by the lifelong work of Lorraine and Ed Warren (portrayed by Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson in the Conjuring films), who have investigated high-profile hauntings and chronicled supernatural phenomena. At 92, Lorraine passed away in her sleep on Thursday night.

The Warren’s own New England Society of Psychic Research announced the news Friday morning (via Fox 61). Lorraine was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut in 1927 and was a self-proclaimed clairvoyant and light trance medium. She and her husband founded the society in 1952 and conducted investigations into reports of paranormal activity, such as the Lindley Street poltergeist, West Point ghost and Amityville Horrors (which spawned 17 films).

The couple wrote 10 books together and traveled across the world lecturing on their findings. Ed Warren passed away in 2009 at 79 years old. One of their early cases was for Annabelle in 1968, a Raggedy Ann doll that was reportedly possessed by the spirit of a child named Annabelle Higgins. It inspired the Annabelle movies, which will continue with Annabelle Comes Home this summer. The upcoming film will see the first appearance of the Warren’s in the spinoff series, thus making it a homecoming for the Conjuring universe.

The Conjuring is based on their assistance to the Perron family in 1971, who experience frightening paranormal sighting in their farm home in Rhode Island. Lorraine Warren served as a consultant for the first movie and even had a cameo in it. She seemed to have bonded with the actress who has portrayed her for the past six years, as Vera Farmiga took to Twitter this morning to honor her following the news of her passing. Take a look:

The couple looked to be the gritty real-life Ghostbusters who certainly made a mark on the subject matter for many belovedly scary horror movies and various supernatural and psychic phenomena. The Warren’s also inspired the The Nun spinoff which became the highest-earning Conjuring film in 2018 when it racked up over $365 million worldwide. A sequel for The Nun is on the way, along with The Conjuring 3 and The Crooked Man.

Lorraine Warren’s death also comes on the same day of the release of The Curse of La Llorona, the first Conjuring spinoff film that does not tie to the couple’s paranormal investigations, though it finds itself in the universe’s timeline between the two Conjuring films.

Although Lorraine Warren was not a filmmaker herself, she will have a lasting impact on Hollywood as her experiences continue to capture the interest of audiences and be immortalized through the dramatic portrayal of her by Vera Farmiga, who will play Warren again in Annabelle Comes Home, coming to theaters on June 28.

How Much Dumbo Made On Its Opening Night

How Much Dumbo Made On Its Opening Night
CGI elephant in live-action Dumbo

Disney is about to fly high with its own brand of live-action nostalgia this year with four of its kind, including remakes for Aladdin, The Lion King and a sequel to Maleficent. Tim Burton’s take on the 1941 classic, Dumbo is starting things off, and it's kicked off its box office run with a debut of $2.6 million during Thursday night screenings starting at 6pm.

While these early numbers are on the low side compared to where Disney live-action films have previously soared on opening night, per Deadline, the circus-set flick has been tracking between $40 and $60 million for its debut weekend. Dumbo’s $2.6 million is just ahead of the live-action Cinderella’s $2.3 million evening entrance back in 2015, which went on to open at $67.5 million. Dumbo has already made double of last year’s Christopher Robin and Alice Through the Looking Glass, both of which took $1.5 million on their Thursday nights.

This debut is behind the early earnings of The Jungle Book, which made $4.2 million on preview night before a huge $103.2 million opening, and Tim Burton’s other Disney reimagining, 2010’s Alice In Wonderland, which stole away $116.1 million in its first weekend. No other live-action Disney flick has touched Beauty and the Beast’s Thursday night preview record of $16.3 million before dancing into a magical $174 million opening weekend.

Dumbo comes up against Jordan Peele’s buzzy horror film Us, which opened at No. 1 last weekend at $94.6 million and even topped Dumbo last night by making $4.5 million on Thursday alone. The two titles benefit from targeting different audiences, and the Disney flick will be the first new family film to open in two weeks.

Box Office Mojo believes Dumbo will soar over Us this weekend for the top spot, perhaps as audiences are ready to recover from the terrifying doppelganger home-invasion thriller. Us is said to take the second spot and Captain Marvel is expected to still make bank as well. Dumbo has the benefit of opening next to the Matthew McConaughey-led stoner comedy, The Beach Bum, which has suffered brutal reviews thus far and made just $200K last night in Thursday night previews.

Globally, Dumbo should do well for itself too, as it is tracking to make $140 million during its first weekend opening in foreign markets, including China. It certainly helps that the movie starring the adorable circus elephant has received positive praise from critics. CinemaBlend’s own Jessica Rawden gave the movie 3 out of 5 stars in her review and the film has a green-splat of 52% on Rotten Tomatoes, so the consensus isn’t exactly glowing.

Dumbo marks Tim Burton’s first movie since 2016’s Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children and a continued collaboration with Danny DeVito and Michael Keaton after Batman Returns. The film now in theaters also stars Eva Green, Colin Farrell, Alan Arkin, Nico Parker and Finley Hobbins.

Armie Hammer Reveals His Most Exhausting Moment Of Filming Hotel Mumbai

Armie Hammer Reveals His Most Exhausting Moment Of Filming Hotel Mumbai
Hotel Mumbai Armie Hammer taking cover and looking for safety in the lobby

Making movies can be a pretty tiresome task, especially if an actor is on a film as seriously intense as Hotel Mumbai. However, when it came to Armie Hammer's role in the film, exhausting is maybe an understatement, as one particular segment had him literally tied-up in production.

In fact, during a particular moment filming Hotel Mumbai -- and minor spoilers -- Hammer's character finds himself tied up as a hostage to the gunmen who overran the Taj Hotel on November 26, 2008. Bound with several other captives, including his onscreen wife played by Nazanin Boniadi, the scene comes at a crucial point during the film's standoff between the terrorists and the various law enforcement agents surrounding the building. With the pressure on to claim any one who's rich and American as collateral, Armie Hammer's character is undoubtedly a high priority target, and his safety from that point becomes one of the burning questions the audience is left to ponder until the end.

It's a powerful scene, but one that left him in a predicament for some time. He told CinemaBlend:

I spent about five days tied up, on the floor, for about 12 hours a day. Which was no fun. Everything just hurt, my hips hurt, my shoulders hurt. That was probably the hardest thing for me.

Armie Hammer revealed this fact during his chat with CinemaBlend at the recent Hotel Mumbai press day. And I can confirm the sequence in question looked just as grueling to watch as it was to film.

So naturally, having your arms and legs tied in such a fashion that you look believably captured on camera is going to do a number on you. On the other end of the camera, there was an equally exhausting task being undertaken: filming between two different locations that had to create a seamless whole.

Hotel Mumbai did use the actual exterior and lobby of the Taj Hotel in Mumbai for the film's titular setting. However, for the various interiors and other locations shown in the film, co-writer/director Anthony Maras used studios in Australia to complete the film's shooting locations. During that same press day, Maras detailed to us how using these two locations presented some interesting working scenarios:

In terms of sort of filming this film, every day was a challenge. We had huge logistical efforts of trying to recreate one of the grandest hotels in the world; and we had to do it between Australia and India. You know, you had Armie Hammer running out of a restaurant in Australia and into a lobby in India, and somehow we had to make that work. It’s a testament to our team on a logistical level, but far more difficult than that or far more poignant than that shall I say, is the challenge of having to do justice to the stories of the survivors and those who didn’t make it. And that was really at the forefront our entire time. The film is a plea for peace, and it’s an honest attempt to try and portray both the horror and the humanity of what went on inside the walls of the Taj Hotel.

You can see both Anthony Maras and Armie Hammer discussing their parts of the Hotel Mumbai process, in the below video, taken from that same press day:

Overall, the greatest obstacle for Hotel Mumbai was, as Anthony Maras said, the one that challenges many films based on a true story: honoring the tragedy and its victims, while also making it a seamless, entertaining, and informative experience. The dedication on both fronts shows strong in the film itself, making for a movie experience that should leave the audience thinking when they're walking out of the theater. Let's just hope all involved are nice and rested after capturing these harrowing events on film.

Hotel Mumbai opens in limited release this weekend, with a wide release taking place on March 29th.

Vanessa Hudgens Is Campaigning To Play Catwoman In The Batman

Vanessa Hudgens Is Campaigning To Play Catwoman In The Batman
Vanessa Hudgen's Sucker Punch poster

The DC live-action universe has been in a fascinating place since its inception, and only continues to surprise the public as time goes on. What started with Zack Snyder's Man of Steel and Batman v Superman has grown into a more capsulated universe, with Aquaman and Shazam! proving the DCEU could deliver critically acclaimed blockbusters. All eyes are on what the future will bring, especially as more stories revolving around Gotham City and its denizens make their way to theaters.

Aside from Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of Harley Quinn) and Todd Phillips' Joker, there's another major Gotham-set story that has been developing at the studio. Matt Reeves' The Batman has already had a long gestation period, and new rumors indicate that Robert Pattinson might replace Ben Affleck as the title character. And now it turns out that High School Musical alum Vanessa Hudgens has been campaigning to be the next live-action Catwoman.

Vanessa Hudgens has been making her intentions known over on her personal Instagram page. A number of the 30 year-old actress' fans have edited together images of her as Catwoman, and Hudgens was thrilled with the results. She shared a handful of those images on her Instagram story, with captions like:

Okay. Who do I need to talk to make this happen lol #dreamrole.

From there, she went on to repost various fan-made art with her as the DC femme fatale. What's more, she put her support behind Josh Gad's ongoing campaign to play Penguin. She certainly following in Gad's footsteps in that regard, as he's been teasing fans about the possibility of playing Penguin for years at this point. Unfortunately, Matt Reeves hasn't revealed his cast for The Batman just yet.

If Vanessa Hudgens gets her wish and ends up playing Catwoman, she'll have some very big shoes (or boots) to fill. On the big screen, she was most recently played by Anne Hathaway in The Dark Knight Rises, who played her as a criminal desperate to have a normal life. And Hathaway was preceded by perhaps the most iconic Catwoman ever: Michelle Pfeiffer in Batman Returns. There hasn't been anyone who was quite as sexy and ferocious as Pfeiffer's Selena Kyle, but it looks like Hudgens is ready to give it the old college try.

In fact, Vanessa Hudgens was a major fan of Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman since childhood. On her same Instagram story, she shared an image of herself as the character on Halloween. Check it out.

It's currently unclear if Vanessa Hudgens will ever get the chance to play Gotham's most deadly feline. But at least she's proven how much the character means to her-- a passion that could only help her performance is Matt Reeves ends up giving her the role. We'll just have to see if Catwoman ends up being a major part in The Batman, and who Reeves ends up casting to play her.

The Batman is currently set to arrive in theaters on June 25th, 2021. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

Avengers: Endgame's Chinese Opening Looks Massive

Avengers: Endgame's Chinese Opening Looks Massive
The Avengers

With pre-sales records broken and theaters planning round-the-clock showings, it looks likely that Avengers: Endgame will have an unprecedented debut at the domestic box office opening weekend. But while domestic audiences still have a day to go until the first preview showings begin, audiences in China, the world’s second-biggest film market, got to experience it a little earlier. Avengers: Endgame has begun its run in The Middle Kingdom and it already looks to be headed towards a massive opening.

Avengers: Endgame opened on Wednesday in China and in its first day in release it smashed the single-day record for the market with a huge $107.2 million. That easily eclipses the previous single-day record holder in the country, the local blockbuster Monster Hunt, which earned $85 million in its opening last year. It is also the best single-day opening for a Hollywood film in the country, racing past The Fate of the Furious’s $69 million.

Avengers: Endgame’s single-day record includes the record $28.2 million the movie earned from midnight preview screenings according to The Hollywood Reporter. The Avengers completely dominated Chinese cinema screens on opening day, with 99% of all movie tickets sold on Wednesday being for the 3-hour MCU epic. To satisfy demand, many of the country’s multiplexes had Endgame playing on every screen and showings were starting every 15 to 30 minutes.

This incredibly fast start portends a ridiculous opening weekend in China for Avengers: Endgame. Prior to its release, the tracking had the Russo Brothers’ film landing at around $270 million for the five-day, Wednesday-Sunday opening. Now some of those prognosticators are amending those predictions with a belief that the film could go as high as $300 million over the five-day opening.

To date, no imported film has ever cracked $500 million in China, but Avengers: Endgame could change that. Hollywood’s biggest box office hit in the country is currently 2017’s The Fate of the Furious, which finished its run with $392.8 million (Avengers: Infinity War made $359.5 million in China). Dom and the family may not hold that record for long though as Chinese online ticketing company Maoyan is projecting a $521 million run for Endgame when it’s all said and done.

We’ve seen in recent years how Hollywood blockbusters and the films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe perform well in China, and how the country’s box office buoys their worldwide totals. So it is not a surprise that Avengers: Endgame is doing well there, but it seems to be outperforming expectations.

Part of that is likely due to the positive reception the film has received. Here in the U.S., Avengers: Endgame is receiving stellar reviews and boasts a fantastic score on Rotten Tomatoes and those in China are echoing that positive reception. The film is enjoying great word of mouth and has a 9.3/10 score on the aforementioned Maoyan’s ticketing app and the more hard to please site Douban, Endgame sits at a 9.2 out of 10.

All these signs point towards Avengers: Endgame doing extremely well, perhaps historically so, over the course of its run. Combined with what is sure to be a huge domestic opening and the Avengers are going out with a serious bang.

Avengers: Endgame opens in domestic theaters this weekend. We’ll keep you updated as previous box office records get snapped to dust and check out our 2019 Release Schedule to see all the movies headed your way as we enter the summer blockbuster season.

Captain Marvel Really Thought Out Goose’s Tentacles

Captain Marvel Really Thought Out Goose’s Tentacles
Goose the Cat / Flerken in Captain Marvel

Captain Marvel may have been the title dominating box office numbers the past few months, but Goose the Cat came straight for our hearts with his adorable scene-stealing moments, namely when he goes full-Flerken and unleashes his tentacles during a space battle. Behind the scenes, a lot of work went into bringing the comic book character to life – in fact, according to VFX supervisor Christopher Townsend, the trickiest visuals to pull off amongst Captain Marvel were those concerning Goose.

Even though much of the cast worked with actual cats on set, about 80% of the shots of Goose are CGI, and creating his tentacles that line his mouth full of pocket dimensions took a lot of attention to detail. Just check out what Christopher Townsend recently said:

In this case, we liked the tentacles look and then we tasked (Industrial Light & Magic) with creating multiple pieces of artwork to try and come up with some ideas of, 'What do the tentacles look like? Are they silvery? Are they metallic? Are they totally organic? Do they look like octopus tentacles or squid tentacles? Should they look like larvae or snakes?' and they came up with a whole bunch of different looks and some with more or less tentacles.

Imagine sitting in a meeting like that discussing Flerken tentacles for actual work. That’s bonkers. In his interview with ComicBook.com, Christopher Townsend explained that whenever he works on Marvel projects, him and his team try to pay homage to the source material wherever they can. When it came to this feline Flerken, they ended up going with just about the exact design from the comic books.

While they created a bunch of different designs to consider, the one closest to what’s found between the pages of Captain Marvel worked out perfectly. The main change to the character was the name, since in the comics he is known as Chewie. The filmmakers decided to go with a Top Gun reference when naming the character set in the ‘90s instead of tying him to Star Wars, which isn’t as anchored in the period being depicted since it’s more of a hot topic today.

Apparently the CGI versions of the cat was so realistic that the film’s directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck couldn’t tell the difference. On set Brie Larson struggled with her cat allergy and while Samuel L. Jackson was great with the cats as it looks on screen, he gave us some mixed signals about whether he enjoyed working with his feline co-stars. Ben Mendelsohn, who played Talos the Skrull was apparently very patient with them and helped them get used to working with a green alien.

Since the Flerken was shown to not only be adorable but of a “high threat level” in Captain Marvel, fans are awaiting a return for Goose. While many were rooting for a comeback in Avengers: Endgame the character sadly didn’t get the invite. Maybe next time… given Fury’s forgiven the feline for their last encounter.

That Time Paul Rudd Asked People To Punch Him In The Ant-Man Suit To Scratch An Itch

That Time Paul Rudd Asked People To Punch Him In The Ant-Man Suit To Scratch An Itch
Ant-Man in Avengers: Endgame

Having an itch you can’t scratch is one of the great struggles of our species. It's a plight universally understood and maddeningly frustrating. Even superheroes, or at least the actors who play them, are not immune from this plague. In fact, their costumes can sometimes make matters worse. Such was the case for Ant-Man actor Paul Rudd, who had to get creative and ask people to punch him when suffering an itch on the Avengers: Endgame set. As he tells it:

One of the things I didn’t like about my costume is that the leather and everything else make it really hard if I have an itch on my back [laughs] and want to scratch it. I remember having to go around to people and have them punch me in the back really hard to get rid of an itch. With the kind of suit I had, I couldn’t do it. And it gets hot. We are sometimes shooting outside. The suit material doesn’t breathe very well.

Desperate itches call for desperate measures, and when it’s a choice between getting punched and enduring the misery of an itch you can’t scratch, Paul Rudd knows the choice is easy. As he told Inquirer, the leather of the Ant-Man costume made it impossible for him to scratch an itch. Whether that was because of how it limited his mobility, that the material was too thick for a scratch to get through or both, he knew he had to seek outside help.

So the actor asked people to punch him in the back in the hopes that the force of the punch would get through the leather Ant-Man suit and vanquish the itch that beset him. It sounds like he went to multiple people for help too, but unfortunately he didn't reveal which ones. No disrespect to anyone’s strength, but I expect getting punched in the back by Tom Holland isn’t quite the same as getting punched by Chris Hemsworth.

I like to think that this was a combined effort that, like defeating Thanos, required the might of all the Avengers to accomplish. If he really had the powers of Ant-Man, Paul Rudd could have just told one of the ants to take care of it, but alas, in lieu of functional Pym tech, he had to rely on more primitive methods.

Unscratchable itches are just one of the many trials and tribulations actors who play big screen superheroes face due to their costumes. The suits are often heavy and uncomfortable. Some restrict your movement and feel claustrophobic. We’ve heard complaints about superhero suits being very hot, a sentiment Paul Rudd echoes, and smelling bad. They’re also not the most accommodating when you have to go to the bathroom.

Sometimes the hardest choices require the strongest wills and we are all grateful that these actors choose to endure miserable suits and unscratchable itches to entertain us. Avengers: Endgame is set to reap the rewards of those sacrifices as it has already broken records for advance ticket sales.

Avengers: Endgame arrives in theaters on April 26. It’s three hours long, so make sure you wear scratch-friendly clothing and stay frosty, because there are spoilers out there. How Much Child’s Play Could Make Opening Weekend

How Much Child’s Play Could Make Opening Weekend
Child's Play

The Child's Play remake is getting ready to make its debut and while it has a lot going for it, like Mark Hamill's voice bringing Chuckie to life this time around, is that going to be enough to make the new movie a massive hit? While numbers are still early, the new Child's Play is currently tracking for an opening weekend somewhere between $12 and $22 million.

While a number as low as $12 million doesn't necessarily sound like a lot of money, especially for a summer release, Child's Play isn't going to be the most expensive movie ever made and and so it doesn't actually need to make a lot to be a success.

Having said that, part of the reason the movie might find it difficult to have a strong opening weekend is that it's opening against a major tentpole release, Pixar's Toy Story 4.

Certainly, putting a horror movie up against a Pixar release was an intentional bit of counter programming to try and grab those movie goers who don't care so much for the family film, but Pixar is so broadly popular that it's going to attract a massive audience, even many of the people who might otherwise be interested in a horror movie.

The other problem facing Child's Play, as Box Office Pro points out, is that another horror movie, Annabelle Comes Home, opens a week after Child's Play, and with that movie being part of the popular Conjuring franchise, it's possible horror fans might be tempted to wait and check out the new film rather than go in for the remake.

The Annabelle release certainly does give the impression that Child's Play will have a hard time making money in the weeks following release. With another horror franchise to compete with directly, box office dollars could get split between them, resulting in neither film being strong hits. Those that grew up with the original Child's Play franchise might be inclined to check out the remake while younger viewers might go in for the Conjuring movie.

There is one final reason why the new Child's Play might have issues and that's because many of those involved in the original franchise aren't on board with the new movie. Actress Jennifer Tilly has made it clear she doesn't love the idea and franchise creator Don Mancini, who isn't involved in the new film is also not pleased. He's been working on a new Child's Play TV series which has nothing to do with the new movie.

The reboot likely needs the franchise fans in order to succeed, but if large numbers of them stay away because they don't like the idea of the series being rebooted in the first place, the film could be in serious trouble.

The new Child's Play arrives in theaters June 21.

Nobody Will Guess What Happens In Avengers: Endgame, Robert Downey Jr. Says

Nobody Will Guess What Happens In Avengers: Endgame, Robert Downey Jr. Says
Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man / Tony Stark in Avengers: endgame

Wait, have we only been waiting a year for the epic cliffhanger that started with Avengers: Infinity War? I don't know about you, but I would have sworn it’s been longer. Plot twist(?): This is Quantum Realm’s world and we’re just living in it. This impatience Marvel fans collectively feel is probably because Avengers: Endgame has easily become one of the most heavily anticipated movies in the history of film. The movie does follow over a decade of build-up and follows 21 other films starring these characters.

The event film has fans guessing left and right about what exactly will happen… and getting real creative too. Have you heard the viral one in which Ant-Man apparently crawls up Thanos’ butt to explode him from the inside out? Good stuff. With so many theories, you’d think some fans have actually already guessed what will happen by the time Endgame closes. Not according to the cast. Here’s what Robert Downey Jr. had to say:

I guarantee you there is no way anybody could guess what's going to happen.

Okay, RDJ! Have a little faith in us! We must have guessed at least some of what goes down in the culmination by now. One popular theory suggests the remaining Avengers will decide to travel back in time via the Quantum Realm in order to reverse the damage Thanos has done. It’s the most logical alternative! Maybe we have it all wrong, though? More of the Avengers have weighed in on the unpredictable and grand spectacle awaiting fans with Endgame.

Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man): Infinity War was nuts, but this one is going to be our finest hour.

Chris Evans (Captain America): Every time you think Marvel's pulled every single trick out of the bag, they actually saved the best stuff for this one.

Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow): These are the highest stakes that the Avengers have ever faced.

Brie Larson (Captain Marvel): This is the end of the fireworks show, the grand finale.

Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye): The storytelling is insane, you just don't know what to expect.

Check out some of the Endgame cast go higher, further, and faster with the movie’s expectations with the film’s newest featurette ahead of its release later this month:

As if the anticipation isn’t high already, these are some crazy huge statements from the main Avengers, who seem confident fans will be impressed and surprised with the outcome. Given all that’s resting on this particular MCU installment, I would be personally very extremely impressed and a little shocked if Endgame delivers on completely throwing audiences for a loop on this one -- after all this hype -- but they have pulled it off before.

What do you think? Will Endgame blow your expectations out of the water after already being one of the most anticipated movies ever? The film has a lot of ground to cover even in its three-hour runtime, perhaps including the end to Captain America’s on-screen story. Let us know your thoughts below!

No, Keanu Reeves Is Not In Hobbs And Shaw

No, Keanu Reeves Is Not In Hobbs And Shaw
John Wick getting a suit made in John Wick Chapter 2

The new Fast and Furious spinoff movie already had an immense amount of star power thanks to the likes of Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, and Idris Elba, but last month a new rumor implied that the movie was going to be even bigger thanks to the addition of Keanu Reeves to the cast of Hobbs & Shaw. Unfortunately, it was not to be, as the John Wick star has not put the rumor to bed. He's not in the movie.

The rumor landed about a month ago and it claimed that the new film would reveal that Idris Elba's character, who is presented as the film's villain in the trailers, is actually working for an even bigger bad guy, who would be played by Keanu Reeves. While the role was being described as a significant one, it was also suggested that Reeves might only appear in a post-credits sequence that would set up a Hobbs and Shaw sequel.

While Reeves admits to Variety that there were conversations with the Hobbs & Shaw team, he is very clear that nothing happened and he's not in the film. According to Reeves...

I don’t know how that happened. I really honestly do not know how that happened… I’ve been contacted, but yeah, I have no idea how that part of the story happened.

So, while it sounds like the original rumor had some basis in fact, as Keanu Reeves apparently could have had a role in the new Fast & Furious spinoff, it wasn't strictly true because no deal was ever reached. Keanu has nothing but good things to say about Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham and it sounds like he'd love to work with them if the opportunity ever came along.

The idea of Keanu Reeves appearing in a Fast & Furious movie wasn't entire crazy on its face. The movie is being directed by David Leitch, who was one of the co-directors on the first John Wick film alongside Chad Stahelski.

It does make one wonder if the description of the character Reeves was rumored to play might then turn out to be true. Perhaps another A-list actor will be appearing in the film in the role of the power behind the throne.

While there have been a handful of times that people behind a new movie have outright lied in an attempt to prevent a reveal, it doesn't feel like that's the case here. Instead it seems that conversations behind-the-scenes got misinterpreted as a done deal when things were far from that.

While The Rock versus Keanu Reeves is certainly a big screen battle I'd love to see, it appears I'll have to wait for another time and another place. Although, now that Reeves is on board for a fourth John Wick movie, he may be too busy himself to fit into the Rock's equally busy schedule.

The 10 Best George Clooney Movies, Ranked

The 10 Best George Clooney Movies, Ranked
George Clooney in Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?

George Clooney is the perfect definition of a movie star. He’s a bit of a throwback to Old Hollywood, with his dashing good lucks and his undeniable charm. Before starring in huge hits like Ocean’s Eleven, Gravity and Michael Clayton, he found work as a humble struggling actor.

He started his career in the eighties, appearing in bit parts on sitcoms like The Facts Of Life and Golden Girls before his breakout role, as Dr. Doug Ross on NBC’s ER in the mid-nineties. Since then his star has only grown brighter.

George Clooney has won multiple Oscars, both as an actor (Syriana) and a producer (Argo) and starred in both big budget blockbusters and smaller indie films. He’s also had his fair share of misses in his career, most infamously, his turn as the Caped Crusader in Batman & Robin, a movie so bad, it killed the franchise for a while.

Yet his successes far outnumber his bombs, so we’ve put together a ranking of George Clooney’s 10 best movies, a couple of which you might have missed along the way. Take a look.

10. Confessions Of A Dangerous Mind (2002)

George Clooney directs this fantastic film about '70s game show host Chuck Barris (played by Sam Rockwell). Barris got famous by producing and hosting The Gong Show, a show so ridiculous, it’s amazing it was as popular as it was (its influence over TV is still evident today). Barris figured out that a lot of people in the world were desperate for their 15 minutes of fame, even the wildly untalented, and millions of people tuned in to watch those people fail on the small screen.

However, there was a whole lot more to Chuck Barris than being a simple game show host, at least Barris would have you believe anyway. Confessions Of A Dangerous Mind is based on Barris’ “unauthorized biography” of the same name written by the man himself. Sam Rockwell stars as Chuck Barris, who is portrayed as an alcohol-soaked jerk with delusions of grandeur. Clooney played CIA agent Jim Byrd, who recruits Barris to be an undercover agent.

Among the many outrageous claims Barris made about himself in the book was that he was a CIA hitman who used his cover as a game show host to travel the world and assassinate America’s enemies. Rockwell’s performance captures Chuck Barris’ erratic and sometimes insane behavior perfectly. If you’ve never seen it, you should. The film also stands out as Clooney’s debut as a director, something else he does very well here, and he'd continue with another movie that ends up on this list.

9. Michael Clayton (2007)

Michael Clayton came at a peak in George Clooney’s career. He was nominated for the Best Actor Oscar, and it came in the midst of other award-winning films in the same time period, like Syriana and Good Night, and Good Luck.

In this gripping story about a high-powered New York attorney who gets caught up in life-threatening controversy, we get a corporate cover-up over a cancer-causing weed killer and a fellow partner losing his mind ( and eventually being murdered) to keep the story out of the press.

George Clooney is left as the only person who can break the story open in a harrowing, classic tale of one man taking on big business and winning.

8. Three Kings (1999)

It’s easy to dismiss Three Kings today. Its style and its plot are both a little dated. For one, the film is a heist film set during the first Persian Gulf War and it was released three years before the second invasion of Iraq. So in terms of history, the perspective is very different today than it was 20 years ago.

The film’s style, driven artistically by director David O. Russell, was groundbreaking at the time, but it’s been so influential, it almost seems contrived today. With a heavy use of handheld steady cams and oversaturated colorizing, the movie’s look is like many other films today, but at the time, nothing else looked or felt like it.

As for George Clooney’s performance in Three Kings, it is masterful. In it, viewers can see the actor blossom into the movie star he was destined to become. Despite legendary arguments with Russell, George Clooney’s performance, alongside his co-stars Ice Cube, Mark Wahlberg and Spike Jonze, radiates with his trademark charisma.

7. Up In The Air (2009)

Up In The Air won’t change your life. It won’t make you question all your beliefs or inspire you change the world. What it will do is delight you and allow you a wonderful break from the heaviness of the real world.

Up In The Air, and George Clooney’s performance in it, is light and, pardon the pun, airy. That’s not a bad thing, it is a very good thing. The film, like Clooney himself, is undeniably charming.

It follows the story of George Clooney’s character as a downsizer who travels the country as a corporate consultant who specializes in laying people off. He travels all week, never spending more than a night or two in anyone place, living the high life on the road taking full advantage of his frequent flier status on American Airlines. He’s a man who never settles into a place called home, for him, home is on the road.

Up In The Air was nominated for a slew of awards, including George Clooney himself for his performance, as well as Anna Kendrick in a star-making role for her as a young apprentice to Clooney’s character.

6. Gravity (2013)

2013’s Gravity found George Clooney in full movie star mode. Maybe it was his portrayal of a cowboy-ish astronaut that did it, but it’s Clooney in full confidence of his abilities. Starring alongside another bonafide movie star in Sandra Bullock and directed by the brilliant Alfonso Cuarón, Gravity has all the components of a blockbuster.

Gravity was nominated for an astounding 10 Academy Awards and won seven, including Best Actress for Sandra Bullock, Best Direct for Cuarón, and most of the technical awards for its gripping story of two astronauts stuck in the vast emptiness of space.

It’s a movie that is beautifully shot and remarkably tense. While it is not the most demanding acting job George Clooney has ever had, it is worthy of inclusion on this list for being the incredible movie that it is.

5. Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009)

Can you take a devastatingly handsome leading man like George Clooney and put him in a movie where you never see his face and still have huge success? The animated masterpiece Fantastic Mr. Fox, directed by Wes Anderson, proves that you can.

The thing is, George Clooney’s irrepressible charm comes through even when it is just his voice. Although he’s playing an animated fox, viewers are keenly aware that it is, in fact, George Clooney.

Fantastic Mr. Fox is Wes Anderson’s first animated movie, but it reads just like live-action Anderson film, complete with the same perfectly balanced camera shots and an excellent soundtrack. It is as charming and as fun as any other of the best Wes Anderson movies and the same can be said about George Clooney’s performance. And yeah, it’s better than Up, the movie that stole all the awards that year in animation.

4. Good Night, And Good Luck (2005)

Good Night, And Good Luck marked a big change for George Clooney. It wasn’t the first feature film he directed, but it did establish him as a big time director as he was nominated for Best Director at the Academy Awards.

Set during the Red Scare and with the backdrop of the infamous anti-communist hearings by Senator Joseph McCarthy, the film, shown in back and white, explores the early days of television news, focusing on CBS’ legendary news achor Edward R. Murrow, played by David Strathairn in a brilliant performance.

George Clooney’s directorial masterpiece took a lot of risks, not the least of which was to release the film in black and white and his talents really shine through in this dramatic retelling of a pivotal time for the country and for journalism in America.

3. Syriana (2005)

Syriana is a complicated film that requires the audience to play close attention. Because of this, it can also be a little confusing. In fact, in many of the (mostly glowing) reviews, this potential confusion is a recurring theme. But if you follow it, it’s brilliant.

George Clooney’s performance is one of the finest of his career and earned him his first, and to date, only, Academy Award for acting, when he won for Best Supporting Actor.

The movie follows multiple narratives through multiple locations throughout the Middle East starring George Clooney as a CIA agent trying to stem the flow of illegal weapons into the Middle East and also features excellent performance for an excellent cast, including Matt Damon, Christopher Plummer, and Jeffery Wright.

2. O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000)

O Brother, Where Art Thou? marks the first collaboration between George Clooney and the Coen brothers and it truly is a brilliant performance by the actor. Clooney plays a con man who has recently escaped from prison in order to get to a pile of money he buried before being arrested in an area about to be flooded with the building of the dam.

Based on Homer’s The Odyssey, George Clooney and his two accomplices, played by John Turturro and Tim Blake Nelson, find themselves on an adventure through a Depression-era Mississippi, in a tale that twists and turns and finds them encountering all manner of weird and wonderful characters.

The actor's role as the hilarious con man with a “gift for gab” is simply wonderful. The audience hangs on every single brilliant sentence that the Coen brothers constructed and George Clooney flawlessly delivers. O Brother is a movie finds a whole bunch of really talented filmmakers and actors at creative peaks.

1. Ocean’s Eleven (2001)

Ocean’s Eleven takes the top spot for one reason, in a movie filmed with the biggest movie stars of the day, including Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Don Cheadle, Carl Reiner, Casey Affleck, Andy Garcia, and Julie Roberts, George Clooney is the standout star. It’s not easy to stand out in that crowd and Clooney does it with ease.

It’s hard to image anyone stealing the show, and yet somehow George Clooney, as the Danny Ocean, the leader of a first rate crew of thieves pulling of the heist in the vault of three casinos, does exactly that. His confidence and swagger as the leading man among leading men oozes through the character and his performance fits the movie’s fun vibe perfectly.

It is easy to see that Clooney and the rest of the brilliant ensemble had a blast making the movie and its success, along with the success of its two sequels truly established George Clooney as one of the biggest stars of his day and, indeed, of all time.

As you’ll probably note, there are a couple of movies that didn’t find their way onto this list, movies where George Clooney had stellar performances, like his role as the doomed captain of a fishing trawler in The Perfect Storm and his Golden Globe-winning performance in The Descendants.

It’s not that they don’t deserve to be on any list of George Clooney’s best films, but it is a testament to how many great movies he’s made and how many great performances he’s shined in over the years. George Clooney is a movie star’s movie star and he continues to prove it over and over again. Even if he was the worst Batman ever.

There’s A John Wick Video Game In The Works

There’s A John Wick Video Game In The Works
Keanu Reeves in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum

Ahead of the release of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (which critics are absolutely loving so far), fans can rest easy that the franchise doesn’t look to be ending anytime soon. Additionally, an action-packed strategy video game is also on the way. Good Shepherd Entertainment and Lionsgate are teaming up for an original game about the titular hitman called John Wick Hex.

The upcoming game will have players taking the role of Keanu Reeves’ character in what’s being described by the publishers as “fight-choreographed chess brought to life in a video game”. John Wick Hex will come from game director Mike Bithell (Thomas Was Alone, Volume) and the help of the creative and stunt teams behind the John Wick franchise. It’s being developed for consoles and PC, exclusively for the Epic Games store.

It will be an interactive experience that will implement the “gun fu style” from the movies and expand the universe previously established on the big screen. Players will be able to unlock various weapons, John Wick suits and locations as they play. There will be limited ammo provided within the game to remain realistic and add an element of strategy to the game play.

Gamers will need to carefully choose every action and attack they make, with the cost and consequences in mind (hence the “fight-choreographed chess” element). Each strategically planned fight will contribute to the player’s progress on their hit job.

There currently isn't a release date announced for the game, but Ian McShane will voice his role of Winston and Lance Reddick will return as Charon in the game and additional actors will soon be announced-- per The Hollywood Reporter.

Check out the announcement trailer for John Wick Hex below:

From the first peak, the game certainly looks to have maintained John Wick’s stylish flair, and gives us an idea about what to expect visually during game play. Looks like a fun time, especially for fans of the film franchise who will get to play in the assassin’s shoes in a brand new adventure from the character.

The two John Wick movies have made over $260 million at the box office worldwide so far, and the third is expected to open at around $30 to $40 million next weekend for the franchise’s highest first weekend yet. The action thriller will follow the hitman on the run, after killing a member of the international assassin’s guild. Halle Berry is joining the cast this time around as an old acquaintance of Wick named Sofia. She rolls with two Belgian Malinois dogs and looks badass as usual.

John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum opens in theaters on May 17, alongside A Dog’s Journey and A Sun is Also a Star. Are you looking forward to playing the game as well as going out to see the third installment? Let us know in the comments below.

Aladdin Actor Tries Not To Slack Off After Being Called 'Hot Jafar'

Aladdin Actor Tries Not To Slack Off After Being Called 'Hot Jafar'
Aladdin Jafar using his staff to enchant a victim

A Disney remake is bound to draw reactions of all sorts when it’s announced. That being said, no one could have predicted how fans anticipating director Guy Ritchie’s big ticket blockbuster would dub actor Marwan Kenzari’s interpretation of Aladdin’s famous villain as “Hot Jafar.”

With such a title comes certain expectations, especially when you have a co-star like Will Smith busting your chops for what you wear to a premiere. Decked out for the L.A. premiere of Aladdin in a classic black tuxedo, Marwan Kenzari gave his adoring public the following message:

Thanks guys, I think of you. It’s very kind I do my best as you can see to keep [Hot Jafar] up. I cannot slack.

Marwan Kenzari has certainly lost the right to slack, as Aladdin has not only shown him what internet fandom looks like, but also what successful premiere attire looks like as well. And that is partially because of the film’s London premiere, which saw Will Smith and Guy Ritchie both making comments on Kenzari’s more subdued look for Aladdin’s regional bow, that the actor is paying more attention to his look.

For comparison, take a look at the side by side photos below, with Marwan Kenzari’s London outfit on the left, and his L.A. outfit on the right:

While ET Online started out with the question of how Marwan Kenzari’s been responding to his duties as “Hot Jafar,” a charismatic ambush from Will Smith during their red carpet interview triggered the discussion of what to wear to an event as big as the premiere of a major motion picture. While it’s important to be impartial, the tuxedo look on Kenzari is undoubtedly the killer.

As Aladdin opened to an $86 million weekend, going by the standard weekend timeframe as opposed to an extended Memorial Day weekend, the fans are still in the mood to see the Disney brand of magic make its way into a more live-action friendly context. That's something that even the villainous Jafar could smile about, when you think about where his story ends up in the animated canon.

Rest assured, should another Aladdin film find its way to a green light over at Disney, Marwan Kenzari is now fully briefed as to how he should work the red carpet in the future. And classic tuxedos are probably only the start, as any further action could see him mix it up with red and black outfits that hew closer to his infamous character’s color scheme. The sky’s the limit at this point.

Aladdin is currently in theaters now; but if you’ve already taken that trip to a whole new world, you can see what else is in store for this year with the 2019 release schedule.

Wonder Woman 1984 Producer Explains The Film’s Delay

Wonder Woman 1984 Producer Explains The Film’s Delay
Wonder Woman 1984 Diana standing in front of a bank of TVs

It may seem like forever since Wonder Woman graced the screens of cinemas everywhere, but in actuality it'll only be a little over two years between director Patty Jenkins' first foray into the DC Comics universe, and her second outing, Wonder Woman 1984. And, as we all know, it would have been a lot sooner if the original 2019 release date Warner Bros. had planned actually stuck, which has us wondering just why the studio would delay a film that's assured to print them so much money. Well, recently, one of the film's producers, Charles Roven, delivered the answer to just what all of the hold up is about, and it all came down to this:

We always wanted the date that we are on right now. The studio felt that until their slate for the year before came together—and they had an amazing end of 2018—that they needed to have a big what I call aircraft carrier, a ‘tentpole’, in [2019]. We had a very rushed pre-production because Patty also did the TNT show and we had a very rushed post-production schedule in order to make the date that we were on, which was November 1, 2019. We were doing it because the studio said they really needed it, and then at a certain point they came to us and they said, ‘You know what, you guys are right. Let’s go back to the month that you guys released Wonder Woman 1 in, and take the extra time.’

Originally slated for December 13, 2019, Wonder Woman 1984 was shifted to November 1, 2019, before eventually having its wish granted with the final extension to a June 5, 2020 release date. With Wonder Woman bowing on June 2, 2017, the film was positioned to become a hit at the summer box office that year with its $102 million opening weekend.

As the second film in the superpowered Gal Gadot starring saga could more than likely outdo that number, it's best to give it the most advantageous release date possible to get the job done. So far, Wonder Woman 1984 is running unopposed in its current slot, ready to campaign for that box office vote in similar conditions to its first time out.

So, what made Warner Bros. change its mind? Well, it looks like one film may have given the studio the confidence to let Wonder Woman 1984 be the summer blockbuster it always wanted to be. That film is the studio's heavily anticipated Mike Flannigan directed adaptation of Stephen King's Doctor Sleep, also known as the direct sequel to one of King's most well known works, The Shining. That film was moved up itself to a November 8, 2019 release date, showing that Warner Bros. clearly has a good amount of faith that the film will deliver the goods.

But, more importantly, and to the point that Charles Roven mentioned in his remarks to Collider, Warner Bros. has decided that maybe it isn't the best decision to rush the second installment of one of their biggest superhero hits into theaters. With Aquaman helping mend fences between the studio and DC Comics fans, and Shazam looking to be another hit in the making, the choice to not pull another Justice League does feel like a refreshing reinforcement of recent strategy.

Wonder Woman 1984 will kick down the doors on theaters worldwide on June 5, 2020.

Pet Sematary Has Screened, Here Are The Early Reactions

Pet Sematary Has Screened, Here Are The Early Reactions

Sometimes dead is better, but not better than getting an early chance to see the new Pet Sematary movie. The 2019 Stephen King adaptation premiered Saturday night, March 16 at South by Southwest, giving lucky critics and fans a first look at the horror movie before it opens wide in the U.S. on April 5.

So far, it sounds like Pet Sematary is a big win. The film highly impressed many viewers, including CinemaBlend's own Sean O'Connell, although he admitted he missed a few little things from Stephen King's original story:

Collier's Perri Nemiroff absolutely raved about the movie, praising directors Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer, along with young star Jeté Laurence as Ellie Creed.

Erik Davis of Fandango praised the film, adding that it should please fans of Stephen King's novel. He also pushed Captain Marvel's Goose out of the way to make room for Pet Sematary's Church -- as if what we really need isn't a buddy movie starring both cats.

Take me to Church! Chris Evangelista of /Film also noted that Pet Sematary isn't 100% faithful to Stephen King's novel, but that didn't damage his opinion of the movie at all. He called it one of the best King adaptations to date.

(The Ramones have a song called "Pet Sematary," if you didn't know.)

Some fans at home -- myself included, I'll admit -- have worried the Pet Sematary trailers may have given away the entire story. Critics like Heather Wixson of Daily Dead tried to put those fears to rest, adding expectations of some major twists.

Since we're talking about a horror film, Meredith Borders of Fangoria emphasized that it delivers on one major requirement -- scares.

Stephen King published Pet Sematary in 1983, and a horror movie adaptation was first released in 1989. We already know from the trailers that this film makes one semi-big change to the source material, but apparently there are more changes ahead.

The 2019 adaptation stars Jason Clarke as Louis Creed, Amy Seimetz as Rachel Creed, John Lithgow as Jud Crandall, Jeté Laurence as Ellie Creed, and both young Hugo Lavoie and Lucas Lavoie as Gage Creed.

Pet Sematary opens opposite DC's Shazam!, which will be some serious competition at the box office. Early estimates put Pet Sematary's opening anywhere from $20 million to $30 million at the domestic North American market. The movie could skew higher after all of these rave reviews -- including promises of secrets not revealed in the trailers -- driving more curious fans to the theater.

Watch Pet Sematary in theaters starting April 5, as one of the many films to keep an eye on with our 2019 movie release date schedule.

The Special Way Kevin Smith Is Responding To Captain Marvel's Mallrats Reference

The Special Way Kevin Smith Is Responding To Captain Marvel's Mallrats Reference

Given the recent passing of Stan Lee, many went to see Captain Marvel with a bit of extra anticipation for his cameo, and the film didn't disappoint. Taking advantage of both its 1995 and Los Angeles setting, the blockbuster depicted Lee at a very specific time in his life - specifically when he was preparing to play a small role in the Kevin Smith indie comedy Mallrats. It's a moment that hit Smith very hard emotionally - as seen on social media - and it seems that the impact has gone as far as to have an effect on the in-production Jay And Silent Bob Reboot:

Much like he did with 2001's Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Kevin Smith is re-exploring his roots with his latest feature, and you can feel it in this image posted to the filmmaker's personal Twitter page. In the shot we see Jason Lee reprise his Mallrats role, superhero aficionado/former late night host Brodie Bruce, and while it's no surprise that he's in a comic book shop (he owns one in the 2001 feature), what is obviously significant is the fact that he is reaching for Captain Marvel Vol. 10 #1, which just hit shelves this past January.

Despite the fact that he knew about it ahead of time, Kevin Smith was left a blubbering mess by Stan Lee's cameo in Captain Marvel - which sees the comic book legend on a bus practicing lines from a Mallrats script ("Trust me, true believer"). Obviously right now we don't know exactly what Brodie will say when he picks up that issue, but one can probably assume fairly that it will be something positive... even if that isn't super on-brand for the cynical former-basement dweller. It's possible that he's evolved even further beyond who he was when we last saw him 18 years ago.

Written and directed by Kevin Smith, Jay And Silent Bob Reboot reunites audiences with the titular characters (Jason Mewes, Smith) as they go on another adventure to Hollywood in hopes of stopping the new Bluntman and Chronic reboot that is in development. In addition to the lead duo and Jason Lee, the film will feature many more familiar View Askewniverse faces, including Shannon Elizabeth, Diedrich Bader, and Brian O'Halloran, as well as some new ones - such as Joe Manganiello and Grant Gustin. Saban Films is on board producing and distributing, but it's not yet known exactly when fans can expect to see the finished film.

As he pretty much always is, Kevin Smith has been active on Twitter all throughout the production of Jay And Silent Bob Reboot, so you can be sure that this isn't the last update we'll get from the set. Stay tuned for more updates as the filming continues of what we hope winds up being a super weird, meta, funny ride.

Why It Makes Sense One Character Isn’t Really In Avengers: Endgame

By now, there’s a good chance you were one of the myriad people who caught the latest Marvel movie, but if you are in the dark about major plot points, this article will contain some spoilers. Proceed at your own caution.

Overall, people seem to be really digging Marvel’s latest flick Avengers: Endgame. That’s been shown through the number of butts that sat in seats this weekend, the number of positive reviews floating around online and the flick’s A+ Cinemascore. But some fans do have a complaint about the movie specifically related to Okoye.

You know Okoye. She’s a prominent member of the Dora Milaje in Wakanda and she’s one of the few notable Wakandans who was not snapped out of existence by Thanos during Avengers: Infinity War. However, actress Danai Gurira’s character only shows up briefly in a few scenes in Endgame.

Due to the fact she was present at the end of the last movie and was a part of the press tour leading up to this movie, some fans online expressed annoyance that we don’t get to see more from Okoye, who is allegedly only in six minutes of Endgame in total.

A typical comment looks something like this:

To look at why Okoye is only briefly in the film, we likely don’t have to look much further than shooting schedules.

How Avengers: Endgame's Shooting Schedule May Have Affected Okoye's Role In The Movie

First and foremost, Avengers: Endgame actually wrapped production in January of 2018 (although reshoots later continued until October). Black Panther came out in February of 2018, just after filming had finished on the two epic Avengers flicks.

It’s also worth pointing out that Black Panther filmed in the spring of 2017, wrapping just a few months before Infinity War wrapped in July of 2017—meaning all three films were being worked up around the same time at Disney and Marvel.

Marvel’s Kevin Feige has talked over and over again about how Wakanda became a major part of Avengers: Infinity War before Black Panther was released into theaters, saying,

That’s the grand Marvel Studios/MCU tradition of just being all in, right? All in on stuff we believe in, before the audience tells us what they think. You’ve heard us talk ad nauseam about the fact that we were in production on Avengers before either Thor or Captain America was released. Same thing with the whole third act of Infinity War being in Wakanda.

The same holds true for Avengers 4, however. The movie was written and wrapping the first phase of filming before Black Panther ever became a cultural phenomenon. In fact, at one point, we learned producer Nate Moore pushed for Black Panther not to be dusted so he could be more omnipresent in the final film, also calling the decision to “murder” Black Panther “personally painful” due to how much the character meant to so many people, himself included. But the story was already cemented at that point.

In the case of Okoye, the character’s story was also created for Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame at the same time Black Panther was coming together.

When the Russo Brothers were putting their own movies together, they may have understood that Black Panther would be a big deal, but it’s hard to know which of the supporting cast members would have a major impact prior to release, which could be one reason Okoye only has a minor role.

How The Walking Dead May Have Affected Okoye's Onscreen Time In Avengers: Endgame

Then, there’s the fact that Danai Gurira has a day job, which also may contribute to scheduling. In addition to her work in the MCU, Gurira is a lead on AMC’s The Walking Dead. The actress’ exit has been confirmed for Season 10, but when all of these movies were coming together, her scheduling was assumedly a whole lot tighter.

Okoye does get a few memorable moments in Avengers: Endgame. She has a snarky exchange with Scarlett Johannson's Black Widow in the stressful period post-snap. She also shows up with the rest of the Wakandans to take on Thanos near the end of the film. As part of that battle, she gets a big girl power moment with some of the other female Avengers.

Regardless, she’s certainly not a main character in this movie, and theoretically if the script had panned out differently, she could have gone on the same adventures the original Avengers + Rocket + Nebula + Ant Man did.

Ultimately, however, The Russo Brothers have stood by the script and their vision, and we got the three-hour adventure we did because of it.

In a lot of ways, Avengers: Endgame is more about Marvel’s past than its future. Okoye is part of Marvel’s future. Catch her in Black Panther 2.
